JSIF Rocky Point Market Social Marketing and Capacity Building Initiative

The community of Rocky Point in Southern Clarendon is the recipient of a new market facility through the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). It emerged during the appraisal for the project that the community had a number of issues that need to be addressed. These include weak sanitation and hygiene practices at the individual and community level, poor solid waste management systems and weak management capacity of the community development society. 

Value Added Services was contracted to develop a social marketing campaign aligned to sensitizing the community on better hygiene, sanitation and garbage disposal practices and care of community resources; to improve relations between vendors and the Clarendon Parish Council as well as the Clarendon Public Health Department and to increase the management and organizational development/capacity of the Rocky Point Benevolent Society.

Value Added Services (VAS) committed to:

  1. Improving the relations between the vendors and the Clarendon Parish Council as well as the Clarendon Public Health Department

 
     2.  Executed a one (1) month social marketing campaign with the following themes and messages:

  • Best Practices for Fish Handling (Consumer and Vendor)
  • Healthy fish buying techniques by the consumer
  • Hygienic practices on food handling (fish) by the consumer
  • Hygienic practices on food handling (fish) and storage by the vendor
  • Proper disposal of fish waste, storage of fish for sale to the public
  • Standards on hygiene and solid waste disposal within commercial spaces
  • Good sanitation and hygiene practices
  • Proper disposal of solid waste
  • Care for community environment

    3.   Increased the management and organizational development/capacity of the Rocky Point Benevolent Society.

Methodology 

In relation to the social marketing campaign, VAS ensured the direct involvement of community members in deploying: 

  • The use of Edutainment
  • Creation of Murals
  • The use of SMS/Text Messaging
  • The use Town Crier / Loud Speaker On Vehicles
  • Issuing of questionnaires were disseminated to the residents at large which determined awareness of hygienic practices, and gathered the community recommendations and achieved buy in among residents.
  • The use of focus group discussions using a participatory approach targeting the Fishing Association, the Benevolent Society and ordinary residents.The second aspect of the scope of work, which speaks to improved relations, will be accomplished through the arrangement of meetings with the intention of opening the lines of communication and facilitating greater cooperation and partnerships.

The third aspect of the scope of work was accomplished via contact training sessions on different disciplines of Capacity Development. Target population were representatives of the Benevolent Society including the Fishing Association.
